Prof. dr. ing. Calin VAIDA received his PhD in 2009 when he contributed to the development of the first Romanian surgical robot, PARAMIS. In 2010 he won a post-doctoral grant where he developed a new solution for the increase of the surgical instruments workspace by adding a multi-bend wrist to classical instruments. During his postdoc he also completed a course in advanced control systems organized in Eggelsberg by B&R Automation Inc, a company which is one of the main partners in Automation of CESTER, all the experimental robots being developed with their product line and control software. During his scientific carrier prof. Vaida coordinated 9 research grants with national and international funding, in several areas of medical robotics. Within AgeWell (a large project focused on the development of robotic solutions for the rehabilitation of patients with different neuromotor deficits) prof. Vaida worked as a senior researcher actively contributing to the robotic solutions developed for the rehabilitation of the upper and lower limb. In 2019 he coordinated the team of engineers involved in the first clinical study of the rehabilitation robots developed within CESTER, which enabled him to better understand the specific needs of real patients and their management in hospital environment. In the same year prof. Vaida received his habilitation for the thesis entitled "Medical robotic systems with application in surgery, oncology and rehabilitation", and since 2020 he was promoted as full professor within the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. In 2022, prof. Vaida was awarded the "Traian Vuia" prize of the Romanian Academy, as a co-author in a collection of reseach publications in Medical Robotics. In his career, prof. Vaida published over 150 scientific papers and acted as co-editor for two Springer books. He gave several plenary lectures as in international conferences and workshops.
